Once upon a time, there was the Bourrine du bois Juquaud

La bourrine de Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez is the actual home of several market gardening families grouped together in this late 19th century farm.

Still intact, it comprises the bourrine, the living quarters of the period, still furnished, and numerous outbuildings: the barn, the dairy, the henhouse, the shed, etc. Built in 1818, the bourrine was bequeathed to the Gandemer family in the early 20th century. Armandine Gandemer, its last occupant, left the premises in 1967.

Located on the edge of the Poitevin marshes, not far from the ancient dune belt of Les Mattes, the Bourrine du Bois Juquaud bears witness to the traditional life of the marshes at the beginning of the last century.

La Bourrine is one of the last authentic dwellings made of earth and covered with reeds. Just like in the old days, when the inhabitants lived in harmony with nature.
