Traditional Mara\u00eechine music and dance<\/h2>\n\n

The traditional marsh dance, Mara\u00eechine<\/strong>, has been danced for hundreds of years. Originating in the Vend\u00e9e<\/strong> marshlands around Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie<\/a> and Saint-Jean-de-Monts<\/a>, it’s usually danced by several people in a line or circle, or even by two. Beneath their white headdresses, the women skip to the rhythm of the accordion, veuze (rustic bagpipes) and flutes. The men accompany them in their dark berets. Lively, light and well-paced, the dances of the Vend\u00e9ens<\/strong> were highly reputed, notably the Mara\u00eechine and the Avent-deux. At the time, these dances had a piquant originality that struck all travelers. A light step, accompanied by “forward-backward” movements, and always with the arms swinging… Today, you can see her dance at traditional Vend\u00e9e festivals on historic sites such as the Daviaud<\/a> ecomuseum.<\/p>\n\n

Delicious local dishes<\/h2>

The people of the Vend\u00e9e<\/strong> love local traditions.Exchange, hospitality and a sense of celebration<\/g> are in the DNA of the Mara\u00eechin. And the cuisine of the Mara\u00eechin is no exception! <\/p>

Grilled eels on vine shoots, frogs’ legs with parsley, rata de Margates (cuttlefish), grala\u00efe (grilled mogette, the famous Vend\u00e9e bean), mussels \u00e0 la mara\u00eechine<\/strong>, and more. The list goes on and on. And when all these names are sung in Vend\u00e9en dialect, they’re all the more delicious and authentic. <\/p><\/div>

Traditional houses called “bourrines<\/h2>

For centuries, the meandering marshes have been crossed, shaped and dammed by their inhabitants. <\/p>

Traditional houses, known as “bourrines”, are built further north in the Vend\u00e9e,<\/strong> using whatever the market gardeners had on hand: earth, sand, straw and reeds to make the thatched roof.
